“My Hero Did Not Amuse Me Today” takes me back to 1973-75 when I served in the United States Army. People were adamantly opposed to the war in Vietnam. I didn’t have a problem with that and I myself wasn’t so sure about it. What did bother me was that during that entire time, not once did I wear my uniform in public.
It took almost 25 years to overcome that stigma and yet today I still feel like no one cared. I took an oath to serve and defend the constitution of the United States among other things, no question. I did that. So have all the young men and women serving today including my two oldest sons. War is a terrible thing. Terrorism is worse in some respects.
I spent my tour in Germany in the early ’70’s where terrorism got its start. They decided to stop shipping people to Vietnam as they were starting to pull out troops. Instead I got to deal with terrorists among other things. I am glad I had that experience as it has prepared me for this time and place today. However, the people of the US back then didn’t have it nor did they understand it. But when the sh*t hits the fan, it’s the people on your right and on your left who do matter. When you get right down to it, that’s what it’s all about…..people.
Make all the comments you want about the war, one time I fought for your right to say it and I’m okay with that. But don’t ever fault the men and women who have served to do the same. Sure they had a choice and if everyone chooses not to serve their country we wouldn’t be here today.
I guess what I’m saying is this. Hold your beliefs high, but be careful where you lay the blame. Certainly the President as commander in chief is a good place to start. But be careful moving down the chain of command. Sooner or later you are going to arrive at your neighbor and after all The Man says to, “…love thy neighbor as thyself”. Works for me.
