On Feb 24th 2009, Aaron Wall had a great about the recent Google Algorithm change called the Vince Update. Accordingly Google is giving a major push to Brands in their search results pages. This was supposedly a response to Eric’s call about the Internet being a “Cesspool“.

Then on March 5th, Matt Cutts clarified Google’s current stance in general and specifically, the Vince update. He denied the fact that it was about Brands. As usual he was giving out 50% truth only. Poor fellow.

And then, on March 7th, traffic across my web portfolio collapsed. I mean it. Overnight, I lost 80% of my traffic. Google funneled it to the brands. I saw established names taking my position. Brands they were, after all. I wasn’t.

My web portfolio is around 6 months old. Prior to launching them, I spent a lot of time experimenting and understanding Google and Search. In my opinion, this algo change will transform the Search industry and their modus operandi.I believe, it is not just about Google pushing the Brands on top. After all, if that is what it is, then Google own earnings will go down (Adwords). This is much more than that.

Thank You Vince for taking Search one step ahead, and for screwing us small time, yet honest webmasters. Thank You.
